Why is 12V battery standard in marine systems?

Small to mid-size boats( typically under 40-50 feet) normally use a 12V battery, while larger yachts and vessels use 24V or 48V batteries. The following factors also cause the 12V battery to be the standard in marine systems.

Ecosystem. Most marine electronics, such as switches, lights, motors, and radios, are 12V components, which are cheaper and common.

Safety. 12V voltage is a safe voltage and won’t generate lethal electric shock for the human body, even in a wet marine environment.

Power Balance. By properly sized wiring, the 12V marine deep cycle battery can provide a balance between current draw and wire size for common applications of lights, motors, and radios.

A 12V marine deep cycle battery can also be connected in series and parallel to reach 24V or 48V higher voltage for large boat applications.

How Does a 12V Deep Cycle Marine Lithium Battery Work?

The 12V deep-cycle marine lithium battery is charged when the lithium ions move from the cathode (positive side) to the anode(negative side), through a liquid electrolyte.

While you are using the marine equipment, the deep cycle lithium battery is discharging, and lithium ions move from the reverse direction to generate electricity to power the marine systems.

Types of 12V Deep Cycle Marine Batteries.

There are four different types of 12V deep cycle marine batteries, including flooded, AGM, GEL, and Lifepo4 batteries. Each battery has its own features and advantages.

12V Deep Cycle Marine Lithium Battery has the longest lifespan up to 10 years and the top win for maintenance-free and lightweight.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

12V marine lifepo4 battery has a long cycle life of 10 years. Mostly, the problem is due to the BMS, and a simple BMS replacement will revive the battery.

  1. Charge&discharge failure

If the battery can’t hold the charge and fails to discharge, there might be below reasons.

Aging battery. When the battery is used for years and constantly discharged in high rain current, the battery might be aged and poor in charge and discharge efficiency.

Quality problem. Poor cell consistency in manufacturing will cause the battery to be easily charged and quickly discharged.

Charger problem. Use the specified 14.6V lifepo4 battery charger can make the 12V marine battery fully charged.

Loose contact. The loose contact with the charger or load will cause the battery to fail to charge and discharge.

  1. Inaccurate Battery Gauge

The inaccurate battery gauge may be caused by an imbalanced cell or a BMS software problem.

-Check each cell’s voltage on the Bluetooth.

-If the cell voltage is consistent, you can upgrade the BMS software.

  1. BMS Cut Off

When the battery is discharged under high load, it easily causes the BMS to shut off and activate overcurrent protection. Use multiple batteries in parallel to reduce the discharge burden of the battery. Use the marine-grade lithium battery BMS to avoid water causing power cutoff.

  1. Battery terminal corrosion

Battery terminal corrosion will cause energy loss and electrical failure for marine applications. Clean the copper terminal or replace the cable entirely. Use a marine battery terminal protector spray and marine-grade Cables: tinned copper wire.
