Both PCM and BMS are designed to protect the batteries. However, they have differences in those aspects:
Function: PCM has a simpler structure and provides overcharging, over-discharging, overcurrent, and short circuit protection for 3.7V 1000mAh LiPo batteries. BMS has more comprehensive and intelligent battery management functions, including cell balancing, temperature monitoring, state-of-charge estimation, communication interfaces, and fault diagnosis and alerts.
Applications: For small devices that use batteries of small voltage and capacity, such as the 3.7V 1000mAh LiPo battery, the PCM is enough to ensure the safety use because they need no more management. But for devices that require more accurate battery management and a smarter monitor, such as electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, or industrial equipment, BMS can significantly improve the healthy use of your devices and benefit your business a lot.
Budget: The cost of PCM is much lower. They are suitable for batteries used for small devices. BMS has a higher initial cost; however, in the long run, it can significantly reduce the cost of maintenance and safety.
This is because 3.7V lithium-ion batteries have low internal resistance and resistance besides high energy density and high discharge rate(C-rate). The low internal resistance can effectively suppress voltage fluctuation and reduce heat accumulation during the discharge process, making the operation of the equipment more stable. The mature protection circuit prevents overcharging and over-discharging, thereby avoiding safety hazards caused by abnormal voltages.
3.7V single-cell lithium-ion batteries can also be flexibly configured in series and/or parallel to meet diverse device requirements for voltage and power, making them popular in the high-power consumption market.
Not recommended. High-power devices generally need a higher work voltage and a larger capacity, such as RC vehicles, smartphones, power tools, etc. Using a 3.7V 1000mAh LiPo battery can’t support the normal operation of the device.
