Types of ATV Battery

Flooded Lead Acid Battery
Flooded Lead Acid Battery

Lead-acid batteries are traditional ATV batteries, containing an electrolyte solution. They typically have a service life of 2-3 years. Because sulfuric acid solutions tend to evaporate and solidify in hot and cold conditions, affecting battery performance, they require regular additions of distilled or deionized water to maintain the electrolyte level. However, compared to other ATV batteries, lead-acid batteries are more affordable and can meet daily needs.

AGM Battery
AGM Battery

AGM batteries use an absorbent fiberglass separator to trap the electrolyte, providing a good seal and leak-proof properties. This eliminates the need to refill the battery with distilled water, providing added peace of mind. AGM batteries offer a longer service life than lead-acid batteries, approximately 3-5 years, and will not deplete even after extended periods of inactivity.

Lithium Battery
Lithium Battery

Lithium batteries built-in smart BMS are the highest-performance battery, offering the durability, strong performance and  lightest weight, making them a popular choice for many ATV projects. They can also be charged more quickly than lead-acid batteries. With proper use, lithium ATV batteries can be cycled over 2,000 times at 1C current, or approximately 8-10 years. Unlike AGM batteries, lithium batteries are completely sealed with shock-resistant design and require no regular maintenance.

How can I maintain my ATV battery and extend its lifespan?

Keep it properly charged. If you don’t use your ATV battery for an extended period, charge it regularly to prevent overdischarge, which can shorten its lifespan.

Use the right charger. Make sure your ATV battery charger is compatible with the battery; otherwise, it won’t charge properly and may even damage the battery.

Avoid overcharging. Don’t overcharge your ATV battery for extended periods, as this can cause the battery to overheat and even swell. To avoid this, choose a battery with a battery management system (BMS) that automatically shuts off power.

Keep it clean. Regularly check the battery terminals to ensure they are clean and corrosion-free, maintaining good conductivity.Add water regularly. Lead acid ATV batteries need regular electrolyte replenishment. Using distilled or deionized water ensures stable fluid levels and power levels.

How to Install a New ATV Battery?

Prepare tools. Prepare tools and batteries, including screwdrivers, wrenches, gloves, and battery maintainers. Most importantly, make sure your battery is the right size for easy installation.

Disconnect the power cord and open the battery compartment.Park the ATV on level ground and unplug the power cord. This will ensure safety during installation.Next, remove the seat and battery box to locate the old battery.

Remove the old battery.Remember to disconnect the cables in order: negative first, then positive. This is safer and less likely to cause security issues.

Install new batteries.Check the orientation of the new battery and connect the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal. If you have a battery maintainer, don’t forget to connect it now, it will significantly extend the life of your battery.

Reseat the battery. Replace the battery holder .Then start the vehicle to ensure a stable power supply.

How should I store my ATV battery?

If you don’t need your ATV battery for a while, you can store it as a spare. First, remember to fully charge the battery beforehand. Maintaining a healthy charge significantly extends its lifespan. Especially for lithium batteries, it’s recommended to use a smart charger with an automatic power-off function for peace of mind and safety. Also, store the battery in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and moisture. This will effectively protect the battery.

What factors affect the lifespan of an ATV battery?

Don’t leave it uncharged for a long time.If an ATV battery is left idle or uncharged for a long time, it may become deeply discharged, not only losing capacity but also becoming completely useless.

Climate.High temperatures can cause the electrolyte in flooded lead-acid batteries to evaporate quickly.Low temperatures can cause the electrolyte to solidify, making it impossible to provide stable power and affecting the vehicle’s starting.

Storage. When not using your ATV battery, remember to store it in a cool, dry place to slow down its aging process.

Do not use a battery maintainer. The main function of a battery maintainer is to maintain the battery charge when the ATV battery is idle for an extended period of time, which is crucial to maintaining the battery life.

How do I tell if my ATV battery needs to be replaced?

Battery performance. If you have difficulty starting the vehicle or it won’t start at all, the battery voltage is low and needs to be inspected and replaced. You can use a voltmeter to measure the voltage. If the voltage is less than 12V, the battery needs to be replaced.

Battery life. Under normal circumstances, VTCBATT powered atv batteries can provide a long lifespan. If the battery runs out of power quickly after being fully charged, it indicates significant battery capacity degradation.

Battery appearance. The battery’s appearance is the most intuitive way to check for any abnormalities in the top rated ATV battery. If the battery shows signs of bulging or cracking, it’s severely damaged and unsafe to use. Additionally, if you notice corrosion on the terminals, it indicates severe internal battery damage.

Can I leave the battery on my ATV permanently?

Yes. You can leave the battery on the ATV permanently, but be careful to recharge it regularly if you don’t ride it for an extended period. Otherwise, the ATV may not start the next time you try to start it. Also, use a battery maintainer when not riding to connect and protect the battery, maintaining a balanced charge and providing peace of mind. In addition to regular charging, the battery should be cleaned and the connections inspected to avoid terminal corrosion and loose cables. If any of these problems occur, replace the battery immediately.

What happens if I remove the positive terminal first when disassembling an ATV battery?

Removing the positive terminal first is dangerous and can cause a short circuit and electric shock, severely damaging the battery. Therefore, you should avoid this during disassembly.

The correct way is to remove the native terminal first priority, even if there is some external short circuit or metal contact,it will not cause any current to follow for any safety risk.
