Battery Safety Test

Extrusion Experiments

A battery is to be subjected to an extrusion test using a hydraulic or mechanical press. The applied force shall be gradually increased at a uniform rate until a pressure of 13 kN ± 0.5 kN (≈3000 lbf) is reached. The force is to be applied by means of a flat plate with a diameter of not less than 30 mm, pressing against the longitudinal axis of the battery. Each cell or battery is to be tested by applying the force in three mutually perpendicular orientations, one of which shall be perpendicular to the battery’s longitudinal axis. The pressure shall be maintained until either the maximum specified load is reached or the battery casing undergoes permanent deformation.

Heavy Object Impact Experiment

A battery is to be subjected to a free-fall impact of a heavy object. A cylindrical steel bar or weight with a mass of 9.1 kg (20 lb) and a diameter of 15.8 mm (5/8 in) is to be dropped from a height of 610 mm (24 in) onto the battery. The battery shall be placed on a rigid, flat surface, and the impact point shall be the most vulnerable surface of the battery casing. Each cell or battery is to be tested by subjecting it to one impact for each of three mutually perpendicular orientations, unless the design symmetry reduces the number of directions required. The test is terminated once the weight comes to rest after the drop.

Nail Penetration Test

A fully charged battery is to be subjected to an acupuncture penetration test. A φ3 mm to φ5 mm stainless steel nail (or needle) is to be used, with a speed of 25 ± 5 mm/s, and the nail shall remain in the battery. The penetration is to be carried out perpendicular to the largest surface of the cell or battery until the nail passes completely through the cell.

The test is to be conducted under ambient temperature (20 ± 5 °C) conditions, and the battery shall be placed on a rigid, non-flammable surface. Each cell is to be subjected to one penetration test.

Acceptance Criteria:No fire or explosion is permitted. Slight smoke, venting, or electrolyte leakage is acceptable.

Free Fall Experiment

A fully charged battery is to be subjected to a free fall test. The battery shall be dropped from a height of 1.0 m (39.4 in) onto a solid concrete surface. Each battery is to be dropped three times, once in each of three mutually perpendicular orientations (including the most critical orientation).

The test is to be conducted under ambient temperature (20 ± 5 °C) conditions. The battery shall be allowed to cool to room temperature between drops if necessary.

Acceptance Criteria:No fire or explosion is permitted. Slight deformation, scratches, or small electrolyte leakage are acceptable. The battery shall not rupture or disassemble.
