ER battery + capacitor solution
The ER battery + capacitor solution combines a high-energy Li-SOCl₂ battery with a high-power hybrid capacitor to achieve both long service life and strong pulse capability. The ER battery provides continuous low-current energy for long-term operation, while the capacitor supplies short-duration high-current pulses during wireless transmission, data communication, or system activation.
- High energy density with long shelf life
- Strong pulse current output
- Reduced voltage drop during peak loads
- Improved performance against passivation effects
- Extended battery service life
- Reliable operation for IoT sensors, smart meters, tracking devices, and remote monitoring systems
This hybrid design is ideal for applications that require ultra-low standby power and occasional high-current pulses.
How RHC1520 behaves during standby, wake-up and recharge
The RHC1520 works together with the Li-SOCl₂ ER battery to manage different power demands.
- Standby: During low-power standby, the ER battery supplies the small continuous current, while the RHC1520 remains charged and ready for pulse support.
- Wake-up: When the device wakes up and requires a high current pulse, the RHC1520 quickly releases stored energy to support the load, reducing voltage drop and protecting the ER battery from sudden current stress.
- Recharge: After the pulse event, the ER battery slowly recharges the RHC1520 through a controlled current flow, preparing it for the next high-power demand.
This operation allows the system to combine the long lifetime of Li-SOCl₂ batteries with the fast pulse capability of a hybrid capacitor.

Safety and Reliability of the ER + RHC1520 Power Structure
The ER + RHC1520 solution uses the capacitor as a controlled pulse energy buffer, not as a way to convert the Li-SOCl₂ primary battery into a rechargeable battery.
No rechargeable cycle inside the ER cell
The Li-SOCl₂ ER battery remains a primary energy source, providing long-term low-current power while gradually recharging the capacitor after pulse events.
Reduced charging risk
The RHC1520 only stores and releases limited pulse energy. Proper system design prevents users from treating the ER battery as a rechargeable battery pack.
Reliable performance in harsh environments
With a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, the RHC1520 supports demanding applications such as outdoor meters, oil and gas monitoring, and remote telemetry systems.
Improved system stability
The capacitor reduces pulse stress on the ER battery, helping maintain stable voltage output and extending overall system reliability.

ER passivation support
How RHC1520 helps with ER battery passivation
Li-SOCl2 ER cells form a lithium chloride layer on the lithium anode during storage. This passivation layer is useful because it helps lower self-discharge, but it can also increase initial resistance when a device suddenly demands high current.
Without a pulse buffer, a long-stored ER cell may be asked to deliver a 500mA to 2A startup pulse directly. That can create voltage sag, longer activation time, communication failure or MCU reset. With RHC1520, the capacitor supplies the first pulse while the ER cell recovers and recharges the capacitor more gradually.
| ER storage effect | LiCl passivation layer helps reduce self-discharge. |
|---|---|
| Direct high-current risk | Voltage drop, slow activation, communication failure or reset. |
| RHC1520 role | Supplies the initial pulse and reduces instant stress on the ER cell. |
| System result | Better cold start behavior and more stable wireless communication. |
Technical comparison
ER single-cell supply vs ER + RHC1520 design
For smart meter and IoT terminals, the RHC hybrid capacitor improves pulse stability without changing the role of the primary ER battery.
| Item | ER Battery Only | ER + RHC1520 |
|---|---|---|
| Service life | 10+ years in suitable low-current designs | 10+ years in suitable low-current designs |
| Pulse capability | Usually limited to tens or hundreds of mA, often below 200-300mA for demanding pulses | Can support 2A to 5A+ pulse events when properly designed |
| GPS / 4G support | Difficult under heavy pulse load | Practical with correct capacitor and pack design |
| Voltage delay / passivation | High load after idle storage may cause voltage sag | RHC directly discharges for the pulse and reduces voltage delay impact |
| Low-temperature startup | Moderate | Improved pulse stability |
| System stability | Medium under RF burst loads | High for smart meters, ETC tags, GPS trackers and industrial sensors |
