When you shop for an RV battery, you’ll usually end up looking at three main types: lead-acid (including the flooded kind), AGM, and lithium-ion. Each has its own quirks, so the “best” one really depends on how you travel and how much power you actually need.
Lithium (LiFePO₄) Batteries
These are the premium option — lightweight, fast-charging, and they just keep going. The ones we recommend are LiFePO₄ with a built-in BMS, which means they’re safe and stable even if you’re camping in a desert in July or up in the mountains in January (about -4°F to 140°F). Yes, they cost the most upfront. But they charge in 2–4 hours, don’t need topping up, and can last for years — so over time, they actually make financial sense.
Lead-Acid Batteries
The old faithful. They’re cheap, widely available, and they’ll do the job if you only hit the road occasionally. Downsides? They’re heavy, slower to charge, and won’t last as many cycles as lithium. But if you’re watching the budget, they’re hard to beat.
Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA) Batteries
A bit more old-school. You’ll need to check the water levels now and then, and they need a well-ventilated space. On the plus side, they can outlast basic sealed lead-acid batteries in cycle life — and they’re built like a tank.
AGM Batteries
Sealed, spill-proof, and tough. AGM batteries handle vibrations and bumps really well, which is why a lot of off-road RVers like them. They’re also maintenance-free, so you can forget about adding water or worrying about ventilation.
Most of the time, RVs will be plugged in for long periods to provide power for in-vehicle amenities, but not every type of RV battery will provide you with a consistent, steady supply of power.
If your RV is a Class A or large type, the lithium RV batteries(especially LiFePO₄ RV batteries) are ideal for you. Deep cycle batteries are a common category on RVs, which are characterized by the ability to repeatedly discharge to 80% or higher capacity without significantly affecting service life. This makes it well-suited for RVs with high power demands and extended usage needs.
In addition to deep cycle batteries, there are also starter and dual-purpose RV batteries. That said, deep cycle batteries remain the most widely used type in RV setups.
Solar panels are a popular and effective add-on for RV battery systems. They convert sunlight into electricity, which a solar charge controller then regulates before being stored in the lithium RV battery.
Typically, a completed solar charging system consists of five key components: solar panels, a charge controller, an inverter, a transfer switch, and batteries. But one solar panel usually cannot provide sufficient power, so RVs are often equipped with multiple solar panels.
The most common RV battery voltages include 6V and 12V, with higher-capacity 8D batteries also being popular, typically at 12V. Among these options, 12V RV batteries are the most widely used and can power all devices in the RV.
