When you notice that the street lights have become significantly dimmer than usual, you should consider replacing the battery of your solar street light because it indicates that there may be something wrong with the solar street light battery’s capacity, ability to be charged, and ability to discharge. If necessary, you’d better replace the solar street light battery at once, because continuing to use a damaged solar street light battery will do harm to the whole solar street light system.
If you keep your solar street light healthy, you should do regular inspections. Where to inspect? First, check connections. The connections are the parts that are most likely to corrode. In addition, external factors such as strong winds may cause the battery to shift, resulting in poor contact and causing problems with the battery.
Secondly, arrange a smart charging controller for your solar street light system. It can prevent your solar street light battery from overcharging and overdischarging, ensuring a safe charge for your battery.
Thirdly, the solar street light battery is part of the solar street light system. The solar panel should be ≥ 4 times the load power of the lamp. Solar panels need to be cleaned monthly; otherwise, they will harm the solar street light battery.
You need to know the power of the lamps used in your project and the brightness level you want. Generally speaking, for lamps of the same material, the higher the power, the higher the brightness level and the greater the power consumption. To maintain sufficient lighting time, the capacity of your battery must be increased accordingly.
In addition, the longer the lighting time is set and the more backup days there are, the larger the battery capacity is required.
Take a 12.8V lithium battery as an example. If your lamp has a power of 40W and works for 8 hours a day, and needs to store enough electricity for 4 consecutive rainy days, then your battery needs at least a 100Ah capacity. The result is calculated according to the following formula:
Capacity(Ah)=Lamp power(W)×Lighting hours(H)×Backup days÷Rated voltage(V)
Then the calculation result of the above example is: 40(W)×8(H)×4÷12.8(V)=100(Ah)
According to different power requirements, solar street light batteries can be mainly divided into 3V, 6V, 12V, 24V, 36V etc. The power is generally from low to high. For batteries used in public road solar street lights, the battery specifications will not be less than 12.8V 30Ah 384 watt-hours to ensure basic lighting time. If the backup days are taken into account, the battery capacity needs to be further expanded.
3V and 6V systems are mainly used for household lighting or backup power supply with low power requirements. These applications do not have high requirements for lighting time.
