How they work:
Lithium-ion batteries charge and discharge by embedding and de-embedding lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes. When charging, lithium ions are extracted from the positive electrode and embedded in the negative electrode (usually graphite), and move in the opposite direction when discharging.
When lithium metal batteries are discharged, lithium atoms lose electrons at the negative electrode and become lithium ions, which enter the electrolyte and reach the positive electrode after passing through the external circuit. When charging, lithium ions are reduced to deposited metal lithium.

Charging a lithium metal battery may form lithium dendrites. Lithium dendrites are branched structures of metallic lithium formed on the negative electrode of a lithium metal battery. The deposition of such dendritic lithium dendrites may damage the diaphragm connected to the positive electrode, causing a short circuit. At the same time, the lithium ions originally used to store the charge are consumed, directly leading to a reduction in battery capacity. Moreover, lithium dendrites react with the electrolyte and decompose it, resulting in further loss of battery capacity.
