Are all D batteries rechargeable?

It depends on exactly what kind.

Non-rechargeable Type:

Alkaline or zinc-carbon materials: The battery is a single cell with a voltage of 1.5V, commonly used in high-power flashlights, radios, and other devices. They are not very environmentally friendly, as they are full of heavy metals.

Lisoci2 Battery materials: Normally named as ER34615M D size lithium thionyl chloride battery.Its nominal voltage is 3.6V and its applicable for wireless sensors,tracking modules,alarms and utility meters. 

Rechargeable:

Ni-MH battery standard voltage is 1.2V, with capacities ranging from 3500mAh to 16000mAh. It features no memory effect, long service life, and is environmentally friendly. They can be applied to industrial equipment and emergency lighting.

Lithium batteries: they bear a nominal voltage of 1.5V to 3.7V, USB-C can be recharged, and they are suitable for wide temperatures(-20℃-60℃).

Nickel-cadmium batteries: Generally have a nominal voltage of 1.2V, are overchargeable, over-discharge without damage, have a capacity that is usually not particularly large, generally less than 5000mAh, making them small in size. They also contain the poisonous metal cadmium.

Types of D-shaped batteries. Special rechargeable D-shaped batteries are also used in wearable devices. They are ultra-thin, high discharge rate, and long cycle life (>1000times).

What is the memory effect in D Batteries?

Battery memory effect is the phenomenon whereby a battery that is recharged before being completely discharged appears to “remember” the previous charge level and reduces its capacity to memorise the level that it was recharged and apparently “forgets” that it has remaining charge. If you charge a battery to half and pull it down to zero over and over again, then the battery will “think” it has half the capacity. Even if you charge it up completely, it will be half discharged.

The memory effect depends upon the battery type: nickel-cadmium batteries show a greater memory effect; nickel-metal hydride batteries have a lesser memory effect; lithium-ion batteries have no memory effect; while lead-acid batteries exhibit none (though partial discharges can reduce the overall service life of a lead-acid battery).

In practical circuit design, how can to avoid or weaken the memory effect?

The use of nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries requires deep discharging the battery regularly (i.e., not to fully discharge and recharge back just a little bit). For lithium batteries, there’s no reason to deeply discharge on purpose—they can be damaged by deep discharges anyway.

What charger should I use for rechargeable D-cell batteries?

Choose the appropriate charger based on the specific materials.

Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) D-cell batteries require a dedicated NiMH charger, though some universal chargers support them (they must be labeled D-cell compatible). Lithium-ion (Li-ion) D-cell batteries must be used with a Li-ion charger and cannot be mixed with NiMH batteries.

D-cell batteries are larger (34mm diameter, 61mm length), so you need a charger with a dedicated charging slot or an adapter (some products support multiple sizes, including AA, AAA, C, and D).

Additionally, there are several functional requirements: a separate charging slot to prevent overcharging and undercharging caused by series charging. Intelligent management features, including overcharge protection, temperature monitoring, and trickle charge, ensure the safety of large-capacity batteries.

Recommended chargers include EBL C/D chargers and BONAI universal chargers, which support NiMH D-cell batteries and can be mixed with other sizes.

What's the difference between the packaging of rechargeable D-cell batteries and other batteries?

Capacity Labeling and Specifications

Rechargeable D-cell battery packaging typically clearly indicates the battery capacity, voltage, and number of charge cycles, making it easier for users to select models suitable for high-power devices.

Ordinary disposable battery packaging emphasizes voltage rather than capacity or cycle life.

Packaging Types

Rechargeable D-cell batteries are divided into industrial packaging and retail packaging. Industrial packaging is typically solid-color plastic and primarily used for bulk supply; retail packaging focuses on design and may include a charger.

Disposable D-cell batteries generally only come in retail packaging and do not require charging accessories.

Safety Design

Can I replace old dry-cell batteries with rechargeable D-cell batteries?

The nominal voltage of rechargeable NiMH D-cell batteries is 1.2V, lower than the 1.5V of alkaline batteries. If your device is voltage-sensitive, you’ll need to test for compatibility. Some lithium-ion D-cell batteries can output a stable 1.5V using a voltage regulator.

High-quality NiMH D-cell batteries can have capacities up to 4500mAh, while alkaline D-cell batteries typically have capacities of 12000-15000mAh. While their single-charge life is shorter, they can be cycled over 500 times, resulting in lower long-term costs.
